How To Remove A Dent From The Door Panel

In this case study, you will learn how to remove a dent from the door panel of a 2018 Ford Mustang by using the most effective PDR techniques. After reading this case study you should have a clear idea of how PDR works. If you find yourself still wondering what it is, read our article on What Is PDR And How Does It Work?

Our client requested our services to remove a dent that measured one inch in diameter and a quarter-inch in-depth.

The dent is located on the top of the upper door right under the door moulding above the upper body line. The dent was caused by another vehicle’s door.

Step one: Wash and polish

Prepare the dented area with car wash soap and remove any transfer paint and light scratches with a light polish to start the repair.

Step 2: Set up access to the working area

We then used:

  • A light system to get the reflection of the dent.
  • A window protector to prevent any damage to the glass.
  • A  window wage to make space for the tool to gain access behind the dent.

The appropriate tool to manipulate the metal.

Step 3: Tool selection

There are four tools predominantly used for door dent repair:

  1. A J hook,
  2. A twisting tool
  3. A J hook pick
  4. A whale tail tool.

Step 4: Push the dent out

With access to the dent, these tools are used in the push and twisting motion to remove the damage.

Heat is used in this repair to help make the metal more malleable and to avoid breaking the paint when we work the metal.

Step 5: Knockdown crowns and High posts

The pushing and twisting tools were used in conjunction with hammer and tap down. Hammer and tap down were used to knock any high spots down that were caused by the tools.

Step 6: Sanding and polishing

In some cases, a little sanding and polishing can be done to remove any residue or any small push marks left from the tools. This step is not always required for each and every repair.

Sanding is necessary if the damage is severe. A low grit sandpaper is the best option for this step. The process is required to correct paint texture. It does not compromise the paint in any way.

A light polishing pad and polish are used to bring up the shine and for a perfect repair. Now you know how to remove a door dent from a door panel.
